An emphasis on the importance of good, consistent skin care has substantially increased in the past decade. More people are starting to take care of their skin earlier and earlier by eating right, staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and moisturizing daily.
Yet, despite these attempts to ward off the ravages of aging, wrinkles and skin issues can still develop.
One facial area particularly vulnerable to the effects of time is the mouth, especially nasolabial folds, the skin creases leading from the nose to the corners of the mouth. A broad range of minimally invasive treatments is designed to minimize the appearance of these lines.
The Restylane line of wrinkle treatments, manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Galderma, is popular due to its track record of safety, effectiveness, and long-lasting results. In December of 2016, Galderma announced FDA approval for Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne, a pair of new advanced fillers that are available at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego. In fact, we are proud to be a part of a select group of skin care centers in the country first chosen to offer Refyne and Defyne.
For patients looking for non-surgical or less invasive alternatives to wrinkle treatment or for patients who have previously been hesitant to undergo dermal filler treatment, these two new products could be the solution they have been looking for.
The Hydrating Properties of the Restylane Line
Until now, traditional Restylane and its two sister products, Silk and Lyft, have been implemented to diminish moderate to severe facial lines and increase mid-face volume. Each injection contains hyaluronic acid, which replaces lost volume from aging.
Allergic reactions to Restylane treatment are extremely rare and we have actually almost never seen any in our patients with millions of patient injections world-wide over 20 years. Side effects are generally minimal and consist of normal rare bruising and swelling due to the natural biocompatibility of hyaluronic acid, a hydrating substance found in the human body, which helps retain small amounts of moisture in the body to fill in a variety of skin creases and lines. It also helps support collagen and elastin fibers deep in the skin. This support strengthens the skin and makes it firmer yet more supple.
“Next-Gen” Technology Makes Refyne and Defyne Unique
The new treatments from Restylane are specifically designed to address nasolabial folds, also called laugh lines.
Twins with Differences
Yet, like human twins, there are subtle differences despite both being designed to diminish the appearance of nasolabial folds. Refyne has the more flexible properties of the two. The softer properties make it ideal for patients looking for subtle improvement. Although it helps correct moderate to severe laugh lines, it can also reduce the effects of other troublesome facial creases such as marionette lines.
Defyne, on the other hand, has slightly firmer properties. While also intended to correct moderate to severe nasolabial folds, it goes deeper to provide more support to the skin’s structural system. This results in skin with more youthful-looking firmness and smoothness.
In clinical trials, both Refyne and Defyne were found to last for 12 months or longer, which is longer than some other hyaluronic dermal fillers on the market.
Possible Side Effects
Neither injectable treatment requires much downtime if any at all. In fact, only a few side effects are to be expected, and they are almost always mild and short-lived. They are almost always limited to the treatment area and include redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, soreness, and itching.
Refyne or Defyne: Which Is the Best Choice?
Without consulting a board-certified, well-trained, and highly skilled cosmetic dermatologist, it is difficult to know. In general, however, it depends on the goals of the patient and the condition of the skin.
The depth and location of the wrinkles to be treated are also considered. One possible treatment is a Refyne-Defyne combination, which can be administered during the same treatment session if different types of wrinkles are being addressed (i.e., shallow or moderate lines as well as deeper, more severe ones).
Both Refyne and Defyne are considered ideal “starter” dermal filler treatments. The innovative XpresHAn technology that makes both Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne softer and more flexible might be a game-changer for previously wary patients. The results are natural-looking and, if a patient is not satisfied with the results, the HA filler can be safely dissolved with an injection of hyaluronidase.
